Expert in data collaboration

A national initiative aimed at developing a secure infrastructure to enable AI-enhanced precision oncology across Switzerland, while ensuring that sensitive and personal health data remains fully protected. By leveraging advanced AI models throughout the patient journey, the initiative seeks to improve diagnostic accuracy, personalize treatments for individual patients, and support informed, data-driven clinical decision-making. This is made possible through Tune Insight’s federated data platforms, which allow AI models to analyze sensitive health data across multiple institutions without compromising patient privacy.

Overview of NAIPO – National AI Initiative for Precision Oncology

Aims to develop a secure infrastructure to enable AI-enhanced precision oncology across Switzerland while ensuring sensitive and personal health data remains protected.

Selected as a Flagship Initiative by Innosuisse, NAIPO will unfold over four years under the joint leadership of the EPFL AI Center and the ETH AI Center. The project brings together a transdisciplinary consortium spanning academia, healthcare, and industry, including the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC), the University Hospitals of Basel, Bern, Geneva, and Zürich, as well as industry partners such as Roche, SOPHiA GENETICS, Debiopharm, and several private and regional hospitals and clinics.

Key goals of NAIPO include:

  • Enabling precision oncology across Switzerland: more personalized, equitable, and effective care regardless of geographical location or institution.
  • Alleviating current challenges: data fragmentation, limited institutional collaboration, infrastructure and regulatory burdens.
  • Deploying advanced AI models (including foundation models, AI agents, privacy-preserving algorithms) in diagnostics, treatment selection, clinical decision-support, and even patient-facing interfaces.
  • Ensuring patient data privacy, data sovereignty, secure governance, and a federated architecture so that sensitive personal health data is not centralized or exposed improperly.

Tune Insight: What We Bring

With Tune Insight’s federated health data platform, we ensure data stays protected (never shared or centralized in raw form), while enabling analyses, ML, and AI workflows across partner institutions. Integrating Tune Insight into NAIPO provides several strategic advantages that help the initiative achieve its goals more effectively:

Data Privacy and Trust

Given NAIPO’s core commitment to safeguarding sensitive patient data, Tune Insight’s federated platform provides an ideal solution, enabling collaborative analytics and AI model training without the need to centralize raw data. This approach not only minimizes the risk of data breaches but also ensures compliance with strict regulatory standards.

Enabling Collaboration
Across Institutions

Hospitals, clinics, and research laboratories participating in NAIPO can leverage Tune Insight to collaboratively generate insights and develop AI models without transferring raw data or dealing with system incompatibilities. This approach effectively addresses the data fragmentation challenges that NAIPO seeks to overcome.

Scalable and Iterative AI Development

Tune Insight supports cohort definition, model validation, federated learning, enabling AI tools to be developed, tested and refined using diverse, multi-institutional data. This leads to more robust, generalizable models that work across settings.

Accelerating Biomarker Discovery and Treatment Personalization

With access to harmonized, multi-center data (clinical, imaging, omics), Tune Insight helps facilitate discovery of new biomarkers, predictive features, and tailoring of therapies. The ability to run privacy-preserved analyses across institutions accelerates statistical power.

Patient Trust and Ethical Acceptability

Patients are more likely to accept AI in medicine if they believe their data is handled properly. Using a platform with strong privacy guarantees helps build this trust.

Facilitates Real-World Implementation
and Clinical Adoption

AI tools validated in real clinical settings that reflect diverse patient populations are more likely to be adopted. Tune Insight helps with that by linking institutions and enabling shared yet secure model training. Also helps with building patient-facing tools and clinician tools that rely on trustworthy AI.
